Overview

This page will provide information on Unemployment Insurance (UI) Approved Training and Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). It is important to note that these are two separate programs with different qualifications.

Unemployment Insurance (UI) Approved Training

Approved training is any training program found by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) to meet approved training guidelines. Training must be vocational or technical in nature and short-term (typically less than two years) to be considered for approved training. To view the list of approved training view the chart below at  Kansas Labor Information Center (KLIC). You will use the Education filter to choose Postsecondary nondegree award and Associate's degree.

To be designated as approved training, a demonstrated need for the training must be established. The training must enhance your opportunity for an early return to employment. Approved training must be training that will lead to employment as opposed to self-employment. Continue to look for work every week you are unemployed unless otherwise directed by KDOL.

If training is approved and all other eligibility requirements are met, you may be eligible to receive benefits. If you are making satisfactory progress towards the completion of training, the work search requirement will be waived.

The number of weeks for which you may be eligible is determined by the total benefit amount of your original claim for unemployment benefits.

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA)

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) is available to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of trade with other countries. TAA includes a variety of benefits and services to help unemployment workers find a new job. Workers may be eligible for training, reemployment services and money to move to a new location for a job. Assistance may also include Trade Readjustment Allowances (TRA) which provides a weekly income if your benefits have run out and you are still unemployed.
